Cuidados después de las carillas: cómo hacer que duren más de 10 añosCaring for veneers: how to make them last more than 10 years

Higiene diaria

Porcelain veneers do not stain or wear like a natural tooth, but the tooth underneath and the gum around them are still living tissue. The lifespan of the treatment depends almost entirely on what happens there.
The first few days
There may be sensitivity to cold, and the gum may be slightly irritated by the placement. It settles within a few days. If something rubs or the bite feels uneven, it needs adjusting: it does not settle by itself.
Daily hygiene
- Soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive paste.
- Floss every day, especially at the margin with the gum.
- A water flosser if there is a tendency to gum inflammation.
Decay does not appear in the porcelain, it appears at the boundary between porcelain and tooth. That millimetre is what you look after.
Bruxism: the decisive factor
Clenching or grinding at night is the most frequent cause of veneer fracture. If there is bruxism, the night guard is not optional: it is part of the treatment.

Habits worth dropping
- Biting ice, pencils or nails.
- Opening packaging with your teeth.
- Eating very hard food with the front teeth.
Stains and discolouration
Porcelain does not stain, but the cement at the edge and the neighbouring natural tooth do. Coffee, mate, wine and tobacco can create shade differences over the years; a periodic professional clean resolves it.
Check-ups
Two visits a year are enough to review margins, gums and bite. Most problems are corrected when caught early; when caught late, the veneer is replaced.
